Manifest Your Future

Jun 09, 2024

In my May 19 Newsletter, I recounted how I used writing in my mid-30s as a way of healing from a difficult period in my past.

But the opposite is also true: Writing is a powerful way to manifest your future.

At age 34, I went to Costa Rica for three months to write, learn to surf and practice yoga. I was able to take on some freelance editing and ghostwriting work as a way to foot the bill.

During that time, I journaled daily. I thought about what I really wanted to create next in my life. Then I wrote it down: I wanted a partner. Someone intelligent and creative, deep and thoughtful. Someone kind. Someone who loved to adventure and had an entrepreneurial spirit. Someone who longed to start a family as much as I did.

On the very last day of my three-month stay in Nosara, I took my surfboard down to the beach. It was a glorious day - turquoise seas, clear skies. The Goldilocks waves were just big enough to challenge me but not too big to pummel me with my beginner skills. I had a fantastic experience surfing that morning, easily the best of my life.

When I got out, I stood for a moment on the shore facing the waves, experiencing heartfelt gratitude for my time in Costa Rica. And when I turned around to head home, there was a handsome surfer standing there, looking at me.

I walked right up to him and introduced myself. It was love at first sight.

Within an hour we had discovered that Kiran was a writer, too. We were the same age and both divorced. He lived in LA; I lived in SF. He had just arrived the night prior for a two-month stint in Nosara during which he was going to pen a screenplay and surf; I was leaving the next morning after a three-month stint in Nosara during which I wrote and surfed.

We enjoyed a magical evening with friends at the only restaurant bar in the village that had live music that night, the Gilded Iguana. Then I left the next morning on my bus to San Jose, the capital city. It would take another three years for us to get together. But when we did, we moved quickly.

You know the happy ending! Kiran and I got married, had our beautiful twins, the Joy Boys, and now find ourselves falling more deeply in love with every passing year.

So, you can write not just to heal the past, but also to manifest the future.

Writing Tip of the Week: Write Down Your Dreams

It’s time to make those daydreams, fantasies, moonshot goals and concrete bucket list ideas more tangible. Write them down!

  1. Set up a quiet space to write
  2. Get out your journal. I’m a big believer in the power of using an actual pen or pencil and paper to manifest, rather than typing into a computer.
  3. Allow your mind to relax. Call in a vision of your desired future.
  4. Write down whatever comes out – without judgment or critique.

Do you have a dream that you’ve manifested through writing? Hit Reply and share it with me!

Quote of the Week

“I know my worth. I embrace my power. I say if I'm beautiful. I say if I'm strong. You will not determine my story. I will.”

— Amy Schumer, Comedian
