Bibliotherapy

Mar 23, 2025

Apparently there’s a new trend: Therapists prescribing reading for therapeutic purposes.

Of course, humans have sought solace, escape and education in literature for centuries. For me, reading books has always been far more than a break from the worries of everyday life.

Books have opened entire new worlds to me. Reading fiction has developed my compassion hugely, showing me what it’s like to live in North Korea (All Woman and Springtime), design video games for a living while struggling with chronic pain (Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow), and overcome a traumatic childhood (Educated), among many other lessons.

Then there’s the realm of non-fiction. My favorite books in this genre have played an instrumental role in making me who I am today. They have taught me how to manage my physical health by consuming mostly whole foods (Optimum Health), accomplish goals (Atomic Habits), and most of all, have been my greatest guides on the spiritual journey (Peace is Every Step, A Path with Heart, this fun one: Be Here Now).

But actual bibliotherapy is new to me! It’s a form of therapy that utilises literature, storytelling or poetry to improve mental health and overall well-being.

According to Dazed:

Today, bibliotherapy involves meeting with a trained bibliotherapist (a book doctor, if you will) to discuss goals, life struggles, and how books can be helpful for progression. The session is uniquely followed by a “book prescription”, which outlines a reading list to help process and better understand the issues discussed. Each book prescription is tailored to help clients understand emotions, gain insight, and discover new perspectives.

From now on, I’m going to look at my reading time as therapy 😀YAY!

Aloha,

MeiMei
