Weekly Tips for Writing & Publishing Your Bestselling Book

Your Inviting Writing Space

Mar 22, 2024

Your desk is cluttered with to-do lists, bills to pay, charging cords, a printer and other technology.

It makes you feel stressed out just to cast eyes upon it.

This is no way to write a book.

Your book demands your whole-hearted commitment.

Your whole-hearted commitment demands an attractive and inviting writing space.

STICKY HABITS

In order to stay true to our habits, says Atomic Habits bestselling author James Clear, we need systems in place to help us achieve them.

He writes: You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.

And the best way to create a habit-forming system is to make your habits obvious, attractive, easy and satisfying.

An obvious cue triggers a craving, which motivates an easy response, which provides an attractive reward, which satisfies the craving and – boom! You have a positive habit feedback loop.

WRITING TIP OF THE WEEK: Create a Habit-Forming Place to Write

Here's how you can make your writing space itself part of your writing habit! Make it:

  1. Obvious: Put your desk right there in the corner of your bedroom, your living room, your kitchen – somewhere you see it several times a day.
  2. Easy: Make it easy by setting up a space that's uncluttered by your other work (even if you just stuff it in a bo underneath the desk!) and committing to writing for just five minutes at the same time every day.
  3. Attractive: Have fun with this one! Decorate your writing space with flowers, candles, photos of loved ones, inspirational quotes, a furry blanket, and anything else that makes you want to spend time there.
  4. Satisfying: Offer yourself a reward every time you sit down to write, such as a cup of your favorite tea, a bite of your favorite chocolate, or 5 minutes of reading a novel for every 5 minutes that you write.

Aloha,

MeiMei

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

"A room should never allow the eye to settle in one place. It should smile at you and create fantasy."
